CB smiled as Jessica sat down at their kitchen table and looked at the meal in front of her.

She raised an eyebrow. “You made this?”

“Yep.”

She tentatively poked at a piece of asparagus with her fork. Then she lifted it to her mouth and took a bite. Her eyes widened.

“Not bad, huh?”

She finished chewing and gave him a sharp look. “Colonel, do you mean to tell me you are this good at cooking, and you’ve been hiding it?”

“Firefly may have taught me a thing or two back in the day.” He paused, realizing that she was right. He’d never really cooked for her. Quick meals here and there, sure. But he’d never taken the time to prepare a great meal. He felt shame at the realization. They’d been married for well over a year. “I’m sorry. I’ve been so caught up with work.”

She smiled and stabbed another asparagus. “I get it. Saving the world is a full-time gig.”

“Still, it’s no excuse. I’m going to do better. I promise.”

“Fine,” she said with a smile. “A couple more meals like this, and I think I can let it slide.”

They ate is silence for a few minutes, enjoying the food and each other’s company.

Then Jessica spoke again. “I’m glad Alex knows.”

CB nodded. Jessica had been pushing to bring Alex in on the Jaden situation for a while. CB understood why. Keeping secrets from his team, and from her in particular, had weighed on him in a way he’d never expected. He and Alex had grown close over the years. In many ways, she was his legacy, the future of the GMT. He’d come to understand that she’d be running things long after he was gone. So keeping something from her—especially something that big—had gnawed at him, changed him until he wasn’t sure he liked who he saw in the mirror anymore. So, yeah, having that weight off his chest was freeing. He finally felt like his old self again. And Alex was already proving valuable. They’d met with Brian that morning to brainstorm possible weapon ideas, and they’d met with the rest of the GMT a little later to devise a strategy that would allow them to help clear the Ferals, while also searching for the answers to Jaden’s mystery.

Still, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Along with the freedom came an implied timeline. Alex wanted action.

“I’m glad she knows too,” he said. “But the long game approach isn’t going to work anymore.”

“Maybe that’s a good thing. Whatever Jaden’s doing, it’s clear his focus isn’t fully on clearing the island. The sooner you can get this cleared up, the sooner everyone can put their full efforts toward the important stuff, right?”

“Agreed. It’s just… this whole thing is baffling. Jaden’s been nothing but helpful since we met him. Hell, his best friend died in a fight to save us.”

“I hear you. Whatever he’s hiding, either it’s something little, maybe something from his past. Or…”

“Or it’s not,” CB finished. “And if it’s not, it could change everything.
